VIDEO: Hollywood Celebrates 125 Years

Officials celebrate the creation of Hollywood 125 years ago with a towering cake and some dancing.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce rolled out the red carpet, lined up a Food Network celebrity pastry chef and entertained a flash mob to help usher in the 125th birthday of Hollywood on Wednesday.

With the Hollywood Sign as a backdrop, officials gathered around a five-tier cake created by Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes to blow out the candles in the courtyard of Hollywood & Highland Center.

Among those at the celebration was comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who films his late-night TV show across the street—Hollywood Boulevard—from the entertainment and shopping complex.

A bit of history: It was on Feb. 1, 1887, that Harvey Wilcox filed with the city a grid map for a 120-acre subdivision that was first known as Hollywoodland.

"It is fitting that the Wilcoxes were entrepreneurs [who made their fortune in real estate] because that is the story of Hollywood," Gubler said. "The community has always drawn larger than life figures who saw its potential and built upon it."
