Coalition Wants to Light Hollywood Gateway Sign

The coalition aims to have the 30-foot sign lit by early 2012 and must gain funding to replace a letter.

Supporters who would like to light the Hollywood Gateway sign, located in the traffic triangle at Wilcox Avenue, Franklin Avenue, and Cahuenga Boulevard, must overcome a $4,000 hurtle.

As they continue fundraising efforts to light the sign, supporters must also raise funds to replace one of the sign's letters, which will cost $4,000.

Merle Singer, president of the Yucca Corridor Coalition, will go before the Hollywood Hills West Neighborhood Council's Environment, Preservation Committee Friday night to discuss the sign and to ask committee members for $4,000 to replace a letter on the sign.

The sign was built and erected a few years ago, but the lighting was never finished, which Singer sees as problematic.

“I think it truly is one of the gateways to Hollywood,” Singer said. “It’s not welcoming in the evening without it being lit.”

The coalition has raised money to fund the project, including about $1,000 that was raised earlier this month, Singer said. The group is still accepting donations.

“This is the last thing, really, that we want to accomplish in terms of meeting the goals we set out with,” she said.

Milton Sznaider owns , which is just steps away from the sign. He said lighting the sign would help deter homeless people from hanging out by the sign at night and would be a benefit to the entire community.

“I think it would be great,” he said. “It would make the neighborhood look a lot nicer.”

Singer, a longtime Hollywood resident, agreed that everyone in the area would benefit from a lit sign.

“I think it distinguishes that area,” she said. “I think the value and prestige you give to yourself, your home and your environment creates an environment that brings more of the same. This is like the icing and the candles on the cake.”

The goal of the Yucca Corridor Coalition is to have the sign lit by early 2012, Singer said.

The Environment, Preservation Committee is scheduled to meet from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Camrose Bungalows, 2101 Highland Ave.
