East Hollywood Farmers' Market Celebrates Grand Opening

Dancing, live music and speeches by local government officials marked Thursday's grand opening.

The East Hollywood Farmers’ Market has been up and running for a month, but Thursday's grand opening meant it was time to celebrate an effort that was five years in the making.

The market, located at Hollywood/Western Metro plaza, aims to draw in locals because of its close proximity to public transit.

“We want to make it convenient for everyone,” said Brandie Gordon, project coordinator of the East Hollywood Farmers’ Market, which is run by the Thai Community Development Center.

Thursday's grand opening celebration featured Northern Thai dance performances and appearances and speeches by California 29th District Congressman Adam Schiff, Assemblyman Mike Eng (D-Monterey Park) and Councilman Tom LaBonge.

Gordon said Thursday also marks the first day of “market match” in which every $5 EBT payment will be eligible for an additional $5 to use at the market for the day. The program is sponsored by Hunger Action L.A.

Lowell Palmer, a singer and guitarist, was on hand before and after the grand opening celebration to entertain those shopping for produce that is “cheap and fresh right from the farmers,” Gordon said.

The market currently has eight vendors, but hopes to add at least a couple more in the near future, she said.

The market is open from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday.
