Firefighters knock out the blaze in an hour, authorities report.

More than 100 firefighters extinguished a blaze at a vacant two-story building on the 1700 block of N. Gramercy Place Sunday night, authorities reported.

The blaze was called in around 5:41 p.m. and was knocked down in an hour, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott. Arson investigators were requested and as of 9:40 p.m. were still on scene, he said. A cause and a damage estimate was not immediately available.

A stretch of Hollywood Boulevard from Wilton Place to Western Avenue was closed to accomodate dozens of firefighting equipment.

Scott said there were 17 engines and trucks, seven ambulances and several supporting fire department vehicles on the scene.

Kelli Juhl was leaving her apartment on her way to dinner with some friends when she noticed smoke coming out from a building next to her apartment complex.

"We saw the fire coming out of the back window of the building, so we walked around it," Juhl said. "The minute it took us to walk over there, the fire had spread and you could see it really far above the houses."
